Winter Storm Belle hit Chicagoland with a whallop, dropping a foot or more of snow in less than 24 hours. But before it snowed, it was rain and freezing rain, which meant that when it did turn to snow, surfaces were slick and sticky with ice, so the snow stuck in great clumps. This created interesting layers of ice and snow, like this one on the railing of a porch that looks like an avalanche frozen in mid fall.
