Description
Route 66, also known as "The Mother Road" and "The Main Street of America," was once the most-traveled roadway in America, covering nearly 2,500 miles and eight states (Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California) between Chicago, Illinois, and Los Angeles, California. During the great migration of the 1930s through the 1960s, it was in constant use by those heading west to find fame and fortune. It has been featured in many movies, including "The Grapes of Wrath" and "Cars." From the 1960s through the 1980s, long portions were replaced by Interstates 40, 44, and 55, though stretches of the original Route 66 are still drivable. For the road trip purist, there is no greater goal than to travel as much of the original two-lane roadway as possible. This image depicts an abandoned station house along the now-defunct passenger railway in the tiny town of Daggett, California.
