Description
The Baha'i House of Worship in Wilmette, Illinois, the oldest of the eight Baha'i houses of worship in the world and the only one in North America. It sits along the shores of Lake Michigan and is surrounded by beautiful gardens and fountains. A place of quiet meditation and peaceful surroundings, persons of all faiths are welcome. The intricate designs on the outside include the Christian Cross, the Jewish Star of David, the Islamic Star and Crescent, and the original Hindu, Buddhist, and Jainist Swastika. Begun in 1921, construction was completed in 1953. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and on the Illinois Board of Tourism's Seven Wonders of Illinois in 2007.
