The St Joseph River flows in a southeasterly direction from Lake Michigan through Indiana and Michigan for over 200 miles. The city of South Bend is named for the sharp turn the river takes in that location. Next door in Mishawaka, it flows through a series of locks in Central Park along a shoreline dotted with rocky beaches, and scrubby beach growth. A fallen branch caught at the edge of one of the locks is pictured here.
